Fill up your water bottle, grab your sunglasses, and hop in the car for a scenic drive up to Flagstaff from Sedona.
The journey from Sedona to Flagstaff takes about an hour without stops, but stretching it into a half-day or more allows you to fully appreciate the breathtaking landscapes of Oak Creek Canyon. The drive along Highway 89A through Oak Creek Canyon is unlike any other in the state. From your starting point in Sedona, you will descend into the canyon before gradually climbing up the canyon walls through a series of seemingly endless switchbacks and tight turns, until you reach the Oak Creek Vista Overlook. By the time you reach Flagstaff you’ll have gained several thousand feet in elevation.
Turn your drive into a full-day adventure with stops for hiking, swimming, and trout fishing before settling in for the night at your Flagstaff hotel.
Just outside of downtown Sedona, Grasshopper Point is an ideal first stop. Enjoy a picnic, swim in the refreshing waters of Oak Creek against the backdrop of towering red cliffs, or take the Midgley Bridge Trail to the Upper Huckaby Hiking Trail leading to Nancy’s Rock. For a different hiking route, follow Allen’s Bend Trail to Casner Canyon Trail and continue to Schnebly Hill Vista Overlook.
As you continue along Highway 89A, Encinoso Picnic Area appears on the left—the first stop within Oak Creek Canyon. Take in the views from the picnic area and use the rest area before heading to the North Wilson Trailhead. A rewarding hike along North Wilson Mountain Trail leads to Wilson Mountain Overlook, where sweeping desert vistas await.
Right off Highway 89A, the Sterling Pass Trailhead leads to Chieftains Point, where you can walk among the towering trees and sheer cliffs. For those eager to explore further, continue along the trail until it splits, then follow the Vultee Arch Trail to see the impressive natural red rock feature.
Marking the midway point of your drive, Slide Rock State Park is a must-visit attraction in Oak Creek Canyon. Once a historic apple farm, this 43-acre park offers a mix of history, recreation, and natural beauty. Popular activities include:
Enjoy a shaded picnic with barbecue facilities at Bootlegger Picnic Area. For a short scenic walk, follow the A.B. Young Trailhead to Oak Creek, or continue along the trail for a more challenging hike full of switchbacks.
Follow the Call of the Canyon at the West Fork Trail, a picturesque route that traces the main tributary of Oak Creek as it winds through towering red rock walls.
Upon reaching the top of the canyon, you’ll find Oak Creek Vista Overlook. This is one part of the road trip that is an absolute must-stop for every traveler. Take in panoramic views of the canyon below, browse handcrafted jewelry, rugs, and artwork from local Navajo and Hopi artisans, and chat with Coconino National Forest rangers about the surrounding landscapes.
This former National Guard training facility is a county park that’s located at Flagstaff’s entrance. Enjoy a thrilling expedition across Flagstaff Extreme Adventure Course at Fort Tuthill, where treetop obstacle courses await for all ages. Enjoy year-round orchestra performances, concerts at the Pepsi Amphitheater, as well as events like the annual Overland Expo in May.
