Join the Riordan Mansion for a Lunchtime Lecture.
Join local author and historian Tom Martin as he presents on his new book, Dock Marston: Grand Canyon’s Colorado River Running Historian, Vol 1. After Norm Nevills guided Otis “Dock” Marston through the Grand Canyon by boat in 1942, Marston became entranced and addicted to Colorado River running. Backed by the Huntington Library, Marston spared no horses in his quest to capture all the river history he possibly could. After Nevills died in 1949, Dock kept right on running rivers and documenting how the National Park Service set the foundation for river regulations in the 1940s and ‘50s. By 1960 when Dock participated in the jet boat uprun of Grand Canyon, he was well on his way to becoming the foremost historian of Colorado River running.
